My Musical Instruments
One of the first questions that people ask me when I say that I am a musician is what instruments I play. So here is the answer;
- I play a range of stringed instruments
- From the age of 8 years old I learnt the violin. First of all classical music, then folk, and other genre including punk, rock, experimental, world music and my own style including electric with effects.
- In my teens I learnt to play the nylon string guitar. Today I play an electrified equivalent (the Ovation I have had for over 20 years). On it I developed a classical sound, flamenco, folk, and a style that includes warmth and passion.
- In my later teens I got myself an electric guitar, great for powerful sounds in Rock and Punk etc. But I was also influenced by Reggae where a clean sound is used. Today I play a Gibson SG and effects help to make it even more versatile.
- The steel string acoustic guitar, often a folky sound, I play one with an internal pick up to play electrically.
- My self-taught piano playing as a child has developed in various ways including being used for composition and keyboard for digital music.
- Tuned like a violin and played like a guitar…naturally I play the mandolin!
- I learnt the accordion for a theatre piece years ago and still occasionally play it now
